Botswana is a landlocked country in Southern Africa which is bordered by Namibia to the west and north, Zimbabwe to the east, and South Africa to the south. The original inhabitants of present-day Botswana were nomads called the San (Bushmen), of whom few remain. Eastern parts were mainly settled by Bantu people called the Tswana. Two cloth dolls made with many different coloured pieces of fabric. Probably recycled. The features have been drawn with a pen. They were made by a woman in Botswana. The money from the sale of these dolls helps to feed and clothe the family. (It is interesting to note that the fabric is printed "Designed in England" on the back. This is intended just for the fabric). Their arms and legs are made up of rolls of wound round fabrics in various colours. (Note the well built body of the young girl!) 9" and 11" high. Botswana, South Africa C.1975. Makers marks: None.
