An unusual Tiriki circumcision doll. The Tiriki are part of the Luhya group of western Kenya. This doll represents a young boy wearing a mask which looks like a large brimmed hat with two holes to see through. He is made of sisal and banana leaves.
12" high. Kenya, East Africa C.1980.
Makers marks: None.
INTERESTING NOTE: The previous owner brought the doll back from Kenya. He was a teacher and students used to go
home for weekends and bring back strawberries which they would sell to some of the staff to pay their school fees.
Occasionally they would also bring back a doll or a basket for sale as well. This is one of those dolls.
