Pair of Masai tribal dolls. The Masai is one of the most well known tribes in Africa. They are to be found in Kenya but also in Tanzania, East Africa. Their houses are loaf-shaped and made of mud, grass, cow dung and sticks. The women are responsible for making the houses, collecting firewood and carrying water. The men are responsible for the security and the boys look after the livestock. The upper bodies and lower legs of these dolls are made of very hard wood, and the heads are very well carved and have painted features. The upper arms and upper legs are just fabric, enabling the dolls to sit well. They both have pierced ears and the man is wearing two pairs of earings, the woman, one pair.
Both dolls are 23" high. Kenya. C.1990.
